Before the Film Takes Shape

There’s a stage in filmmaking where everything exists, but nothing is fully formed yet.

We have footage. We have interviews. We have moments that carry weight and emotion.

But the film itself is still taking shape.

That’s where we are right now with Dance to the Beat.

We’re building what we’re calling The Digital Dancefloor, a short film that brings together the core elements of the feature. Not just a preview, but a focused, intentional piece that reflects the heart of the story we’re telling.

The Work Beneath the Surface

Pre-production is where the real work begins.

This is the stage where we move from gathering to deciding.

We’re going back into our interviews and listening with intention, identifying the soundbites that truly carry the story. Not everything makes the cut, and that’s the point.

We’re asking:

  • What moments are essential?

  • Which voices define this story?

  • What are we committing to say in this first expression of the film?

Because every decision at this stage shapes what the audience will ultimately experience.

From Exploration to Precision

We’re exploring tools like Milanote to map everything out, but this isn’t just about organizing ideas.

It’s about getting precise.

We’re laying out selects, grouping themes, and structuring the story in a way that allows us to clearly see what we have and just as importantly what we don’t.

We’re actively identifying:

  • voices we still need to include

  • perspectives that deepen the story

  • visual elements and B-roll that will bring texture and context

  • and moments that still need to be captured to complete this first expression

It’s a process of assembling the puzzle while also recognizing the pieces that are still missing.

Once that clarity is in place, everything else follows:

  • what we need to shoot

  • who we need to film

  • where we need to go

  • and how we schedule it all

This is where we begin locking in those plans, preparing to move into principal photography, where we begin filming and bringing everything to life on screen.

Building "The Digital Dancefloor"

The Digital Dancefloor is our first full expression of Dance to the Beat.

It’s not the entire film, but it carries its essence.

We’re shaping something that feels complete in its own right, while still leaving space for the full feature to expand. A balance between what we already have and what we intentionally choose to add.

It’s focused. It’s intentional. And it reflects the direction the film is moving in.

Capturing the moments that bring the story to life.

Moving Forward

As we step into this next phase, we’re building with clarity and purpose.

We’re refining what exists, identifying what’s missing, and preparing to capture the final pieces that will bring this version of the story together.

And for everyone following this journey, we appreciate you being part of the process.
